I went down to my friend Robe's wedding in Austin in October of 1997. Lots of fun, as Austin always is, and for once, I took a camera. In fact, I took two. They were both disposables, but I still came away with some good pictures, which I frequently don't get on vacations. So many of these will be from that trip for now, but there'll be more as I run across them and scan them in.
My buddy Mark and I toured the Celis Brewery outside of Austin, and had a great time. The brewery had just won first place at the American Beer Awards or something, and they'd just received their medals. The guide was really cool, and as the medals hadn't yet been framed, he let me and Mark wear them for pictures. However, in the immortal words of Rob Reiner as Marty DiBergi in This is Spinal Tap, "...don't...bother looking for it, it's not there anymore." Yep, the brain trust at Miller Brewing bought the Celis brewery a couple of years ago, and as they didn't know what they had or how to sell it, they decided to close it down instead. So as of around Christmas of 2000, say goodbye to one of the better American-made Belgian-style brews. (And no thanks to Miller Brewing or Anheuser-Busch, either. Miller Brewing shut down Celis, but Anheuser-Busch is guilty of foisting that nasty American-style Budweiser on the world. Too egregious for words.)
Here's me with the medal and the winning beer (102K), and here's Mark wearing it (117K). P.S. If they ever start brewing it again, try Celis White, a solid Belgian white ale. Delicious.
Here's a picture I took on my way home from that trip. About an hour outside of town, I caught sight of an amazing sunset, and decided to pull over & shoot the last of my panoramic pictures. This is a big file (145K), so be patient.
One more picture of me & Mark.....we're in tuxes (76K) for our friend Todd's wedding in 1989 or so. We're also trying to show our respect by wearing yarmulkes, but we were both new to it, and had a bit of trouble.
Here's my high school business teacher. (158K) This guy was a riot. A big dork, but a nice enough guy. Let's just say....very naive. He used to give us his keys to open the computer room in the library, and eventually one of the many students who instead went outside and drove his car somewhere(!) wrecked it. Ah, high school.
Here's an old b/w promo for my old band. (43K)
Here's me backstage with Van Halen. (60K) And Eddie looked none too healthy.
Here's my buddy Greg's daughter, Rachael. (88K) She's older now, but can you believe how small she was?
Here's my friend Jim's Christmas card from 1998, with him and KISS! (175K) Another large file, but I know you'll all want to see this one! :D
Aforementioned friend Mark (left) just sent me this one today (October 21, 1999). In it he's posing with Johnny Gimble (center), the fiddler from Bob Wills' band, and (right) Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel, the good folks from Texas who keep Western Swing music alive and well in the 1990's and hopefully beyond. (53K)
Here's a recap of my trip to Hawaii in February of 2003.
Well, that'll have to do it for now. When I get more stuff scanned in, I'll try to update this page more often.
